Viral Video Claims Pineapple Helps Tooth Extraction

Getting your wisdom teeth removed can cause some anxiety leading up to your procedure. It’s completely normal to be a little scared of what’s to come, but this procedure is performed thousands of times each year and is perfectly safe. Still, many patients understandably want to know what they can do to minimize the pain and side effects of healing from this common procedure.

Your wisdom teeth are the four farthest back teeth in your mouth, with two on the upper jaw and two on the lower. Often, these teeth become impacted and can crack or push into your other teeth, causing pain and damage to those teeth. If this happens, or if Dr. Peterson believes it could happen, extracting your wisdom teeth is recommended. While this usually occurs during the teen years, even adults can get their wisdom teeth pulled.

Recently, a TikTok video went viral concerning how to heal faster after wisdom teeth extraction. For those who don’t know, TikTok is a social media app where users post short videos on any subject and gain followers and likes on those videos. The social media site boasts millions of users worldwide.

In the “viral video,” a young woman who underwent wisdom tooth removal tried drinking pineapple juice prior to her wisdom tooth extraction after seeing another video claiming that drinking the pure variety of the juice helped speed up the recovery process.

The young woman chronicled her healing process. While her facial swelling did seem less obvious than some patients get, and her healing process went smoothly, there is no proof that it was due to drinking pineapple juice prior to the procedure. Everyone heals differently, and because the young woman had no complications with her extraction, the healing process would not have been as complicated as it might have otherwise been, say had her teeth been impacted.

While drinking pineapple juice can help with inflammation, it is important to discuss using home remedies with Dr. Peterson prior to your surgery. Most likely, a glass of juice won’t hurt and may even help with minor swelling, but pineapple juice may also interact with medications, so be sure to get an all-clear before consuming.
