Full Mouth Temporaries Post-Op
Your temporaries will not feel like your final restorations, which will be smoother and have more vitality. There is a period of sensitivity towards temperature and chewing until several weeks after your permanent restorations are placed. Please do not eat anything hard or real chewy.
Some patients experience a sensation of contraction with cold/hot food or beverages. This is normal, you will not experience this with your permanent restorations. You will have some discomfort due to the trauma of your preparation appointment. Each patient will vary with the sensitivity they experience depending on the extent of his/her decay, fractures and older restorations removed.
Take 400 – 600mg (two to three tablets) of Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every 6 hours as needed, not to exceed 2400 mg in a 24-hour period.
If that is not enough you can supplement the ibuprofen with Tylenol. Taking Advil and Tylenol together has been clinically proven to be one of the most effect pain relievers you can take, even better than almost all narcotics. It does not make you feel strange (no side effects) so It sometimes doesn’t feel like it is doing anything but it is quite effective.
You can take 2 Advil and 2 Tylenol at the same time if you are having a lot of pain or you can alternate every few hours so you always have some pain reliever in your blood stream.
This mixing only works with Advil and Tylenol. Do not mix any other over the counter drugs like Excedrin, aspirin, Aleve. It isn’t the same thing.

- Brush and rinse with Listerine, Closys or warm salt water. (If the laser was used during your appointment, you will want to wait one day before you brush that area. In addition, warm your toothbrush with hot water to soften bristles when you do brush.) You may also be given other tools to help keep the gums healthy.
- If your bite feels “high” after the anesthetic wears off, please call for an adjustment. With time, a high temporary will bruise the ligament around the tooth and may cause it to become extremely sensitive.
